The technology has been developing extremely rapid in the past few decades and everything seems to be growing around it. Human, as the direct beneficiary of technology, have witnessed the technology developing speed. As there are variously advanced technology products coming out continuously.
However, unlike in the other futuristic film flying cars take over the world. In reverse, the film demonstrates a logical and reasonable advance of today’s technology, the director Spike Jonze explores more about the relationship between technology and humanity. He creates a future story in 2025. The main character, Theodore Twombly is a lonely man living and working in Los Angeles. One day, he purchased a smart operating system( kind of like Siri in the future) who calls herself Samantha and after the times of their conversation, the romance is built up between them.
So what is the direct trying to demonstrate to us? Here is what I found out.
In the highly developed digital world, the computer system like Samantha in the film is deciding and making choice for us most of the time. It seems like everything is more convenient than before with this certain kind of technology. However, the real human thoughts are complex and unpredictable, so is it possible for people to lose our capacity to actually “deal with” the less convenient and more unpredictable real situation in life? Plus, as in the film, the computer system “Samantha” is taking care of pretty much everything in our life and “she” kind of become the only person that we talk to most of the days. It is predicting the current trend current technological isolation. Thinking about if it goes on like this, would it make us even more isolated? How would it influence our communication skills? Much better or worse? Yes, technology brings us numerous benefit to a great extent. But it is important for us to think about the negative effect that technology caused. By doing this, human and technology would be harmoniously exist. Furthermore, as it is possible for people to actually fall in love with a technology product in this film. The portray of those characters having relationship with their machine object or maybe we could say the object with human, completely explore the complexity of the building and growing of the human relationship with technology. The humanity of technology, in another way, is appearing throughout the whole film, the action of “Samantha” sharing her story with us embodies the human need for humility, understanding and patience.
So where would this technology lead to us eventually? The world that Spike Jonze has portrayed in the film is extremely real. The AI system in the film sounds like the highly advanced version of Apple’s Siri, so it is not impossible for us to think about the technology behind it become real in a short period from now. However, the most challenging part is not about the mechanic of getting AI to work, it is about define the meaning of the product.
In an rough conclusion, it is significant for human to find a balance between relying on technology and relying on technology too much.
